On Thursday March 3, the Suffolk University Athletic Department invited the real life stars of the movie “The Fighter,” boxer Micky Ward and his brother Dicky Eklund to the Regan Gymnasium.
“Irish” Micky Ward, the former WBU Light Welterweight Champion, along with his brother and trainer Dicky Eklund spoke to Suffolk’s student-athletes for an hour. Ward, who hails from Lowell, Massachusetts gave insight into his boxing career and also shared stories of the experiences from having a movie made chronicling his boxing career.
During their hour long visit, Eklund took students from out of the crowd and gave them a one-round, three minute sparring lesson. Eklund traded jabs with freshman Dennis Driftmeyer (Haverhill, Mass.) of the Men’s Basketball team and sophomore Jacqueline Vienneau (Salem, N.H.) of the Women’s Basketball team.
“The Fighter” was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, winning the awards for Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale) and Best Supporting Actress (Melissa Leo).
“The Fighter” was produced by David Hoberman, who holds an honorary degree from Suffolk University and will return to the campus in April as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar.
