Waltham, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University men's soccer squad was eliminated from the 2013 NCAA Division III Championship with a 3-0 setback against Brandeis in the opening round of the tournament on the road on Saturday evening.
Brandeis got on the board early, scoring goals on its first two shots of the contest. In the second minute, Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) sent a crossing pass to Michael Soboff (Framingham, Mass.) for the first goal of the evening at the 1:51 mark. Just over three minutes later, Soboff sent a crossing pass of his own where Savonen put a shot into the corner of the net to give the host Judges the 2-0 advantage. Brandeis took the two goal lead heading into halftime after a 9-1 advantage in shots for the stanza.
Brandeis tacked on an insurance goal just 3:01 into the second half after Soboff picked up his second assist of the game when he connected on a pass to Evan Jastremski (Marshfield, Mass.), who slid a shot into the back of the net to propel the Judges to the 3-0 victory.
Brandeis keeper Joe Graffy (Concord, N.H.) made one save in the shutout for Brandeis while junior Ryan Dzierzawski (Oakland, Mich.) had six saves in the setback for the Wildcats.
With the win, Brandeis improves to 15-4-1 overall while Johnson & Wales suffers their second loss of the season to wrap up the 2013 campaign with a remarkable 14-2-6 record. Brandeis will take on the winner of tonight's second contest between Rutgers-Newark and Roger Williams tomorrow at 5 p.m.
