GNAC Softball Report: Week 8

PLAYER OF THE WEEK Maddie Castigliego, Simmons (Sr., P - Bristol, R.I.) - Guided the Sharks to a 4-0 week and help Simmons improve to 7-1 in GNAC North Division play both in the circle and at the plate. In the circle, posted a 2-0 record to improve to 12-8 on the season, while maintaining a two-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio, tallying 13 strikeouts to just six walks. Helped her own cause at the dish posting a .667 batting average (6-9) with two doubles, two triples and five RBI, while registering a 2.060 OPS (1.333 SLG%, .727 OBP). In an 8-0 shutout against Norwich University on Saturday afternoon, Castigliego became just the 18th player in Simmons history to record her 100th base-hit of her career.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK Tianna Dawe, Emmanuel (Mass.) (Sr., P/DP - Lynn, Mass.) - Excelled in the circle posting a 2-0 record to go along with a save, working 15 innings for two complete-game victories for Emmanuel. Scattered four hits while striking out seven in a complete-game shutout win vs. Regis to open the week before working 7.0 innings on the road vs. Albertus Magnus, surrendering just one run in EC's 4-1 win, striking out five. Worked the final four outs in the Saints 3-0 win in game 2 of the twinbill against Fisher to earn the save.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Piper Kinney, Simmons (Fy., P - Marlborough, Mass.) - Posting a 2-0 record in the circle, helped Simmons to a 4-0 record by tossing back-to-back two-hitters. Against Anna Maria College early Friday evening, struck out nine AMCATS in a complete game shutout, while allowing just two hits and walking just one. The following day against Norwich University, registered another two-hitter, while striking out five Cadets in her second shutout in as many days.

WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Sylvia Foley, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (So., 3B - Scarborough, Maine) - Hit .533 (8-15) with five runs, a double, six RBI, and two stolen bases in a 2-2 week for the Monks. In a doubleheader sweep over Rivier on Saturday, went 5-7 with three runs, three RBI, and a pair of steals. Fielded 15 chances without making an error at the hot corner during the four contests.
Alex Marie, Dean (Sr., OF - Danvers, Mass.) - Led the Dean hitters with a .692 average in a 2-2 week. Had nine hits, scored seven runs, knocked in three and stole two bases. Had an OBP of .733 and slugged 1.154. Recorded at least one hit in each of the four games. Began the week with a 3-for-4 effort in a tough 7-6 road loss at Wellesley. Went a combined 5-for-6 with three doubles, six runs scored and two RBIs against Fisher.
Diana Petrarca, Regis (Mass.) (Sr., P/1B - Coventry, R.I.) - Led the Pride offensively at the plate, going 9-for-19 (.474) with a hit in all six games during the week. Went 4-for-5 with a home run in each end of the twinbill against Wentworth. Drove in the game-tying run and then pitched the Pride to the win in Thursday's 2-1 victory over Emmanuel. Went 2-for-4 with an RBI, plus she earned her first career shutout in the pitching circle in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Elms. Earned both Regis victories in the circle. Thursday against Emmanuel, allowed just one unearned run as she stranded eight Saint runners on the bases. Earned her first career shutout in a key conference victory over Elms on Saturday, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out four batters. Helped her own cause at the plate, driving in one run in each game she pitched.
Jill Pulek, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Gr., IF - Cheshire, Conn.) - Batted .500 (5-of-10) with two home runs and four RBI last week for JWU. In Saturday's DH sweep of Lasell - which secured the No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs for the Wildcats - went 4-for-6 with two stolen bases, and three runs scored. In the nightcap against the Lasers, smacked two home runs and drove in four, bringing her season totals to seven HR and 33 RBI.
Eryn Sheeley, Lasell (Jr., P/1B - ) - Threw a one hitter complete game against USJ, where she tied a school record with 13 strikeouts in the game. She also broke the school record for strikeouts in a season in the process.
Jenna Zup, St. Joseph (Conn.) (So., INF - Berlin, Conn.) - Paced the Blue Jays during a 2-2 week, slashing .500/.571/.750 across the four games, tallying six hits, five runs, one double, one triple, and three RBI. Went 2-for-4 at the plate in game two at Lasell, tallying a run and one RBI. Concluded the week with a strong showing in a doubleheader against Anna Maria. Started the doubleheader by scoring two runs in game one, before going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game two, slashing a double and a triple while scoring two runs and posting two RBI.
