The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has a vast array of stellar athletes in Division-III sports. Norwich University’s women’s basketball senior captain Christine Daniels is no exception.
A native of Concord, New Hampshire, Christine Daniels began her collegiate career as a standout athlete. Interestingly enough, Christine’s older sister Ally recently graduated from Norwich University as well with an outstanding basketball career of her own with 900 career points and was also voted the GNAC “Defensive Player of the Year”.
Carrying on the family tradition, Daniels was ranked third in rebounds among 441 women’s basketball players in Division-III. To achieve this, Daniels recorded 12 double-doubles and currently leads the GNAC in offensive and defensive rebounds.
Daniels has been a great leader for the Cadets especially when the 2009-2010 season began with a new head coach in Mark Zacher.
Zacher described his first talk with Daniels, “When I became the head coach of this program and I telephoned all of the returning players, my first words to her were meant to be a personal challenge to her,” Zacher continued, “She has responded to that challenge and is making my words prophetic.”
Daniels’ most recent achievements include 1,000 points and over 800 rebounds in her four-year collegiate career. Zacher explained,
“She has scored over 1,000 points in her career, only one of eleven Norwich women’s basketball players to reach that mark…snared over 800 rebounds, only one of sixteen GNAC women’s basketball players to reach that plateau….ranks third in the NCAA in rebounding and first in ‘double-doubles.’ All of this shows what a great player that she is and has been for our program.”
Daniels has played in all of 25 games this season and started in 23. The senior captain helped lead the Cadets to a record of 13-5 overall and 5-1 in conference play by averaging 16.5 points a game. Daniels was also named GNAC Player of the Week twice during the 2010 season.
“Christine is a leader both by word and, most importantly, by example.” Zacher praised, “[She] is one of the hardest working players that I have the pleasure to be associated with in my years of coaching.”
Daniels’ hard work and dedication to the Cadets’ women’s basketball program has emulated throughout her time at the university. Such a glimmering career at Norwich will most definitely be marked as one of the more impressive in the school’s athletic history.
