PROVIDENCE - The Johnson & Wales Women's Soccer team defeated the Lasell Lasers 3-0 to capture their second straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship.
Johnson & Wales broke the deadlock just under 20 minutes into the game. Olivia Cairrao (Bristol, R.I.) took a corner won by Jordan Restivo (Utica, N.Y.), and found Emily DeRoehn (Old Lyme, Conn.)at the back post who headed into the net for the opening goal.
After playing to a scoreless remainder of the first half, the Wildcats continued to pressure the Laser goal in the opening moments of the second frame. Cairrao lined up for another corner kick, this time finding Hailey Viebrock (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) in the box who headed home, giving JWU a 2-0 lead with 35 minutes remaining.
JWU tacked on one more goal, off a corner kick for the third time. This time the kick was taken short by Restivo to Cairrao, who drove the ball across the face of goal, findingAngelina Oliveira (Naugatuck, Conn.) at the back post, who tapped in for the third Wildcat goal.
Carly McCrumb made a save late in the game on a breakaway from the Lasers, preserving the shut out for Johnson & Wales. With their third straight postseason 3-0 victory, the Wildcats captured their second straight GNAC title.
DeRoehn was named tournament MVP, with Cairrao, Restivo, McCrumb, and Trina Capezza (Coventry, R.I.) earning all-tournament nods.
