PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales (RI) University women's soccer team captured its third consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship with a 2-1 win over Lasell University Saturday night at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Sophomores Emily DeRoehn and Angelina Oliveira scored for the Wildcats (19-2-1), who won their program-record 19th win against just two losses and one draw. With the win, JWU clinches the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
DeRoehn staked the home team to a 1-0 lead just 2:20 into the match with a free kick a few yards behind the midfield line that bounced past Lasell keeper Kyli Swann. Twenty minutes later, graduate student Jordan Restivo blasted a free kick that was turned aside by Swann, but Olivera pounced on the rebound and booted it into the back of the net.
After the Wildcats outshot the Lasers 10-2 in the opening stanza, the Lasers tilted the field in the second half and eventually cut their deficit in half at 58:54 on a goal from Sarah Lynch. Michelina D'Agostino started the play with a penalty kick from the nearside left corner.
JWU regained momentum later in the second half and finished the night with a 21-9 edge in shots. Sophomore Carly McCrumb recorded four saves to earn her 12th win of the season.
