Mustangs Hire Payum Payman as Women’s Tennis Coach

NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College athletic department is pleased to announce the hiring of Payum Payman as the new head women's tennis coach.

Payum joins the Mustangs with a wealth of tennis experience, most notably from his current position as the Assistant Chief Development Officer and Community Tennis Coordinator for the Boston Lobsters of Mylan World Team Tennis (WTT).

"I am looking forward to helping the girls improve as players and hopefully get them one or two steps ahead of where they have been the past few years.  It is definitely an exciting time for Mount Ida tennis and I look forward to the challenge," said Payman.

From 2009-2011, Payman served as the Assistant Coach for both the men's and women's tennis programs at Brandeis University. During his time with the Judges, Payum was named the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year after earning the same award in the Northeast Region. In 2010, Payman was a member of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Tennis Coaching Staff of the Year.

A former professional tennis player on the ATP circuit, Payman played in Orlando, Florida and around the world between 2007 and 2009. He trained with world renowned fitness coach Pat Etcheberry and practiced with former world number one Justine Henin and Jelena Jankovic. After competing in the ATP, Payum returned to his native Massachusetts and became a tennis teaching professional at Belmont Country Club, where he helped run tennis operations at one of New England's most prestigious clubs while also conducting lessons and on-court programming.

Payum graduated from Wheaton College (MA) in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Business. While at Wheaton, Payum was a four-year member of the Lyon's men's tennis team while also being named an NCAA Division IIII All-American and reaching the semi-finals of the NCAA Division III tournament. In 2007, Payman was ranked 8th in the nation and 5th in the New England Region of NCAA Division III.
