2010 Men's Basketball Championship Preview

The two teams with the best regular season conference records will face off this Saturday for the 2010 Great Northeast Men’s Basketball Championship. The #1 seed Albertus Magnus Falcons (21-6, 15-3 GNAC) are set to battle the #2 seed Emerson College Lions (20-7, 15-3 GNAC) on Saturday, February 27 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Arena in “The Nest”. The winner of the GNAC Championship will be awarded an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Guitian Named All-American Honorable Mention

asell College men’s basketball senior captain, Jose Guitian, has been named a D3Hoops.com All-American Honorable Mention. The 6’10” forward from Miami, Florida has earned an abundance of accolades this season, which now has culminated with the incredible honor of being recognized nationally, and becoming the first student-athlete at Lasell College to earn the All-American recognition.

Emmanuel's Smith Wins By Losing

Levi Smith finds himself on the losing end of the stick every night and he loves it. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies, Smith has certainly taken his show on the road. He graduated from Emmanuel College in 2008 as the men's basketball program's all-time leader in blocked shots and the program's fourth all-time leading scorer and subsequently signed on to play for the Washington Generals. The Generals are known world-wide for losing literally thousands of times to the world famous Harlem Globetrotters. Smith and the Generals now face defeat at the hands of the Globetrotters between seven to nine times per week. However, it appears that all of these losses have culminated in a giant win for Levi Smith.

This past week the Lasell men’s basketball team saw their chances at making the NCAA tournament come to an end and so did the careers of four seniors, Jose Guitian, Brad Caravoulias, Junior Sainval, and Kevin Fallon. Despite losing, the season was not a complete failure for these four. All the guys played very important rolls and had their time to shine.

Becker sophomore guard Rajai Leggett (New Haven, Conn.) netted 10 point, grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, had 3 blocks, 3 steals and 4 assists and sophomore center Trey Jacobs (Lexington Park, MD) dropped in a game-high 20 points and fourth seeded Becker College used a clutch run early in the second half to pull away to a 89-73 win over seventh seeded Rivier College in the championship game of the ECAC Division III New England Men's Basketball Tournament.

Against cross town rival Daniel Webster College, the Raiders of Rivier College wasted no time in taking advantage of their first ECAC tournament appearance in school history. Just 3 minutes into the game Rivier took an 8-6 lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore Nick Bean and never looked back as the Raiders cruised on to a 75-70 victory.

Becker College claimed a 85-82 victory in the ECAC New England Tournament semi-finals, upsetting the no. 1 seeded Lasers of Lasell College. After 15 lead changes and thirteen ties, the Hawks earned the right to host the championship finals on their home court. The Lasers completed their 2008-2009 season with a 19-10 overall record.

The No. 2 Colby-Sawyer men’s basketball team was upset by the No. 7 Rivier Raiders in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament, 72-62, Wednesday evening. The Raiders were led by senior Lance Bisson (Nashua, N.H.), who scored 20 points and dished out seven assists. Senior Duncan Szeliga ended his Colby-Sawyer career with 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, for his third double-double of the season.

Bridgewater State (21-6) defeated Saint Joseph’s (21-8), 95-79, in the opening round of the NCAA DIII Tournament on Thursday evening. Tyler Kelley ‘11 (Saco, ME) had 16 points to lead four SJC players who reached double figures. The Bears, who will travel to Middlebury College on Saturday for a second round contest, shot 66.7% from the field overall and 73.1% in the second stanza in the win.

In the first round of the ECAC DIII New England men’s basketball tournament the Lasers of Lasell College pulled out an 89-84 win over the Seahawks of Salve Regina. The eight seeded Seahawks ended their 2008-2009 season with a 14-14 record, while the no. 1 Lasers (19-9) move onto the semi-finals on Saturday against no. 4 Becker College.

Third-seeded Saint Joseph’s (21-7, 12-6 GNAC) needed overtime to get past #4 Emmanuel (17-11, 12-6) in the GNAC Championship game at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon. The Monks held a lead for over 39 minutes in regulation, but a two-pointer from Saints forward Tyrone Buchanan ‘11 (Detroit, MI) as the final buzzer rang tied the game, sending the title bout into overtime. The extra frame was knotted at 72-apiece, but a back-door play executed by Elbie Murphy ‘09 (Loudonville, NY) with two seconds remaining clinched a 74-72 victory and a GNAC Championship for the Monks. Chris Davis ‘11 (New York, NY) scored a team-high 16 points in the NCAA Tournament berth-clinching win.

Third-seed Saint Joseph's (Maine) defeated seventh-seed Albertus Magnus by a margin of 75-64 and fourth-seed Emmanuel upset first-seed Lasell in double overtime 94-91. Saint Joseph's (Maine) will host Emmanuel at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 28th.
