Olympian Bickford Named SJC Cross Country Coach
STANDISH, ME Saint Josephs College Athletic Director Brian Curtin has named Bruce Bickford as the Monks Mens and Womens Cross Country Head Coach. Bickford fills the spot vacated by Tom Dann, who stepped down earlier this summer after 14 years as the program leader, and will be the sixth coach in team history.

GNACs Professional Development Seminar is a Success
The highly-anticipated seminar was held at the Doubletree Suites in Boston, Massachusetts from August 11-12 with a GNAC cookout to welcome all attendees. For the 4th edition, the GNAC presented a Student Athlete Well-Being program focused on Mental Health. The PDS is also a great opportunity for companies, sports vendors and sport officiating bureaus to network and foster relationships with all of the GNAC schools.

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference recognized 530 student-athletes from 15 league sports on the 2010 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team. Second-year student-athletes from all 13 member institutions who hold a cumulative 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average for the 2009-2010 academic school year and are a member of a varsity team are eligible.

Johnson & Wales Earns 2009-2010 Men's Commissioner's Cup
Johnson & Wales University claims the 2009-2010 Mens Great Northeast Athletic Conference Commissioners Cup for the second year in a row. The Wildcats earned points in every mens sport offered by the GNAC. Johnson & Wales captured two GNAC championships in the fall, golf and cross-country, and earned five points for each towards the GNAC Commissioner Cup. The men's teams earned a total of 22 points in the standings.

Emerson College captured the 2009-2010 Womens Great Northeast Athletic Conference Commissioners Cup for the second year in a row. The Lions secured the honor by earning a second place finish this spring in both softball and lacrosse, earning four points each. The womens teams collected a total of 25 points in the standings.

Simmons Tennis Advances in NCAA Tournament
AMHERST, MA Simmons Tennis earned a 5-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College Friday afternoon in the NCAA Division III Womens Tennis Regional Championship First Round, which was held indoors at the Hampshire College Bay Road Tennis Club. The Chargers end their season at 17-6, while the Sharks improve to 15-7 and will take on regional host Amherst College Saturday at 1 p.m.

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- In a classic pitcher's duel, Rivier College defeated Bowdoin College, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Softball Regional Tournament Thursday afternoon at Wellesley College. With the victory, the Raiders advance to Game #7, Friday, May 14, at 2pm against Eastern Connecticut State. The Polar Bears move to Game #5, Friday at 10am against Husson University.

Simmons Tennis will face off with Colby-Sawyer College in Fridays NCAA Division III Tournament, held at Amherst College. The Sharks earned an automatic bid to nationals after winning the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament, and have won two of three spring season matches while training for the NCAA, including one 7-2 victory over Colby-Sawyer.

St. Josephs of Maine Captures 2010 GNAC Championship
East Providence, R.I. St. Josephs of Maine captured the 2010 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Baseball Championship with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Suffolk at Pierce Field on Sunday afternoon. The Monks earned the conferences automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. St. Josephs senior Ben Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player.

For the first time, the Fisher Cats will play a seven-inning exhibition game when they take on Rivier College at 6:00pm on April 6, 2010. Rivier Captures Third Straight GNAC Championship
March 27, 2010-Nashua NH Rivier College defeated Emmanuel College 3-0 to win the 2010 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Mens Volleyball Championship. The Raiders, winners of the last three GNAC Championships, won the three set battle by the score of 30-25, 30-28, 30-26 to clinch a spot in the North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Championship in Cape Cod, MA on April 9-11. The Saints, who made their third trip to the GNAC Championship match, will also receive an automatic bid to the NECVA Championship.

Suffolk Tops Baseball 2010 GNAC Pre-Season Poll
The 2009 GNAC Champion, Suffolk University has been chosen as the 2010 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Baseball preseason favorite in a vote conducted by GNAC coaches. Last Years GNAC Champion, Emerson College, has been chosen as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Softball preseason favorite in a vote conducted by GNAC coaches. Emerson was ranked 19th in the NCAA Div. III National Poll for the first time in school history. Last season they made it to the first round of NCAA tournament and Co-SIDA recognition for their academic achievements. The top-seeded Emmanuel College Womens Basketball Team defeated 2nd-seeded Norwich University, 75-61, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Championship on Saturday afternoon. In front of a packed house at the Jean Yawkey Center, the Saints cruised to their fourth-straight GNAC title and their 14th conference championship since the leagues inception. Lasers Give Back to the Community
NEWTON, MA- The Lasell College mens and womens basketball teams, in conjunction with the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), raised $400.00 in an effort to support two community causes during the month of February. The Lasers first hosted two basketball contests to raise money and awareness in support of Haiti after two earthquakes hit and devastated the island country. The second fundraising effort was in support of the WBCA Pink Zone global initiative to raise money for breast cancer awareness.

IMAN DAVIS BECOMES EMMANUELS ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER
Emmanuel College defeated Wesleyan University, 88-82, in a non-conference womens basketball game played on Wednesday, February 3. Emmanuels Iman Davis (Toms River, N.J.) entered the game with 1,611 career points, just fifteen points shy of the Emmanuel programs career scoring record. In just twenty-one minutes of action, the senior guard poured in 21 points and in doing so became the programs new all-time leading scorer.

Shannon Sets The Record

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference Forms New Partnership With The Allston-Brighton Substance Abuse Task Force
The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and the Allston-Brighton Substance Abuse Task Force (ABSATF) are proud to announce a new partnership. This joint venture will allow the GNAC to assist the ABSATF in its mission to educate the Allston-Brighton community about the dangers of underage drinking and substance abuse. A lot of people dont talk about the issues of drug and alcohol abuse until a tragedy occurs. We wanted to get involved with the Task Force to bring awareness and education to the people who are affected most by substance abuse, college students, said Vaughn Calhoun, GNAC Assistant Commissioner.

Emmanuels Iman Davis Continues Making GNAC Basketball History
Iman Davis made history at the end of the 2008-2009 season by becoming the first Great Northeast Athletic Conference basketball player, male or female, to attain career levels of 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 300 assists. Daviss career totals of 1,474 points, 621 rebounds, and 346 assists earned her a spot in GNAC womens basketball history. Adding her statistics through seven games played this season, the senior guard is currently in 3rd place all-time with 1,501 career points, in 10th place with 351 career assists, and in 24th place with 636 career rebounds.

Sharks Claim 2009 GNAC Swimming & Diving Championship
Simmons Swimming & Diving was named the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Champion on Sunday night, as the Sharks finished the two-day championship meet with 305 team points. The win, Simmons sixth in a row, and eighth in nine years, capped a weekend where 10 GNAC and two pool records fell in one of the fastest GNAC meets in conference history. More than 100 athletes from the GNACs six teams gathered at the Holmes Sports and Fitness Center at Simmons College to race for the championship title.

The St. Joseph College womens basketball team volunteered at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk Oct. 18 at Bushnell Park in Hartford. #1 Saint Joseph's College (14-7-1, 7-2 GNAC) defeated #6 Emerson College (12-8, 5-4 GNAC), 2-1, in the 2009 GNAC Men's Soccer Championship at Westerlea Way Field on Saturday afternoon. Jack LaFreniere '13 (Alton, NH) notched both SJC goals, less than five minutes apart in the second half, to help the Monks capture their first GNAC title. With the win, St. Joe's collects an automatic berth, awarded to the GNAC winner, into the NCAA DIII Tournament, which begins this week. The trip to the NCAA's will be the first in men's soccer program history. NCAA tourney seedings will be announced on Monday morning.

John Parente Receives Amby Smith Distinguished Service Award
John Parente, the Director of Athletics at Johnson & Wales University and former Commissioner of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, received the Amby Smith Distinguished Service Award from his alma mater, West Warwick High School. Parente was honored at the WWHS Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony held on October 1. This award is named after Amby Smith, a 65-year Rhode Island newspaper veteran, athletic supporter, humanitarian and WWHS alumni, who passed away in 2005.

Johnson & Wales Captures 2009 GNAC Men's Golf Championship
Defending champion Johnson & Wales shot a team score of 320 and posted a two-day score of 635, finishing in first place at the seven-team Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships, which concluded Sunday at Allendale Country Club. The Wildcats earned the GNACs automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships next spring.

Simmons Wins 2009 GNAC Women's Tennis Championship
Simmons Tennis captured the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Womens Tennis Championship on Sunday, besting #2 seed Suffolk University 6-0 to take the title for the fifth time in six years. The GNAC Championship caps a perfect 8-0 conference record for the Sharks in 2009.

The 2009 Emerson College Softball team has been named by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as the Division III National Academic Champion by virtue of its cumulative 3.531 grade point average. This is the second time in the past three years that the Lions have earned the top spot.

Over 100 GNAC student-athletes volunteered at the Brian Honan 5K in Allston, Mass. on Sunday, September 20th. GNAC student-athletes have volunteered over the past six years, directing people to the parking lots, registering the 1000 runners, cutting oranges, carrying ice and handing out water along the 3 mile route.

Rivier Tabbed to Win GNAC in Preseason Coaches Poll
Rivier has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the Great Northeast Athletic Conference volleyball title this season in a vote by the conferences head coaches. The Raiders, the 2007 and 2008 GNAC champions, received seven of the possible 13 first-place votes, tallying 90 overall points. Rivier is coming off a season in which they compiled an 11-1 conference record (25-11 overall).

The GNAC Names Amanda Cuiffo and Joseph Campbell to the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee
The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has named Norwich Universitys Amanda Cuiffo and Mount Ida Colleges Joseph Campbell to the NCAA Division III Championships Regional Advisory Committee. GNAC Commissioner Joe Walsh appointed Cuiffo to become the GNACs womens volleyball representative and Campbell will serve as the womens soccer representative.
