Vaughn Calhoun Named GNAC Assistant Commissioner
The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has named Vaughn Calhoun as the Assistant Commissioner.
Calhoun will begin his duties this summer by attending the Division III Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship Conference in Indianapolis, IN at the NCAA headquarters. He will also be attending Northeastern University in the fall. Calhoun has been accepted into the School of Education and will pursue his doctorate of education focusing his studies in higher education administration.
Before joining the GNAC, Calhoun has worked in the public sector and political arena. Most recently he has served as a recruiter for the Orange County Department of Education. In this position, he was responsible for the recruitment of classified staff – screening applications, interviewing candidates, and presenting various human resource workshops. He has also served as lead field organizer for a successful California State Assembly campaign race as well as interning for the United States Congress.
Calhoun is a 2003 graduate of Rutgers University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in administration of justice. At Rutgers, Calhoun was a three-year letter winner for the Scarlet Knights football team. In 2006, Calhoun received his master’s degree in public policy & administration from California State University Long Beach.
GNAC Commissioner Joe Walsh said, “We conducted a
nationwide search that resulted in an unprecedented response and
several highly qualified candidates. “Vaughn brings a great
combination of professional maturity and a skill set that will be
of great benefit to the GNAC, our member institutions and our
student athletes as he begins his career in college athletic
administration. In particular I am excited about his experience
with the Orange County Department of Education in the area of
designing and presenting career development workshops. I feel that
this will be a big plus for GNAC student athletes.”
The GNAC received an NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority and
Women’s Internship Grant to fund the Assistant Commissioner
position for the next two years. The NCAA created this grant
to prepare individuals for full-time employment in a leadership
role in athletics administration.
