WINTHROP, Mass. – Johnson & Wales University senior guard Quarry Greenaway and Albertus Magnus College freshman forward Shontaey Lovell have unanimously been named the 2016 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Year, it was announced on Monday by the league office.
Greenaway, who helped lead the Wildcats to the GNAC Championship over Albertus on Saturday and was named the Tournament MVP, is the GNAC’s leading scorer at 26.1 points per game and also ranks fourth in both field-goal percentage (54.9) and rebounding (9.3) en route to being named the Player of the Year. He is shooting 40.3 percent from three-point range and went over the 30-point threshold nine times this year.
Lovell was a GNAC First Team selection along with garnering Rookie of the Year honors, as the freshman from Brooklyn, N.Y. ranked first among GNAC leaders in rebounding (11.9) and field-goal percentage (67.3) for the Falcons. His 17.8 points-per-game mark was also good for fifth in the league, and he ranks fifth in Division III with 17 double-doubles.
Johnson & Wales head coach Jamie Benton was voted the GNAC Coach of the Year following a vote by his peers, as the 12th-year leader and former Boston College standout has guided the Wildcats to a 26-2 overall record and a near-perfect league record (17-1).
Joining Greenaway and Lovell on the First Team were Johnson & Wales senior guard Tom Garrick, Anna Maria College senior guard Patrick Bradanese and Lasell College junior guard Armin Omanovic.
Garrick teamed with Greenaway to form a lethal backcourt combination for the Wildcats, who earned the conference’s NCAA Tournament automatic qualifier. Garrick was second only to Greenaway in the GNAC in scoring, averaging 22.4 points on 49.4 percent shooting to go along with 6.5 rebounds.
Bradanese ranked fourth in the GNAC with 19.9 points per game as part of his well-rounded game. He also averaged 6.3 rebounds and led the league with 5.7 assists for the AMCATS, who earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament.
Omanovic ranked third among GNAC leaders with 20.6 points per game to go along with 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists. The junior was a driving force in leading the Lasers to the No. 2 seed in the GNAC Tournament.
Johnson & Wales senior guard Robert Lewis was named the GNAC Defensive Player of the Year, as Lewis served as a backbone for the GNAC champion Wildcats on the defensive end. Lewis is averaging 6.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 23.2 minutes per game.
